Pattern Disruption
The Do's and Don'ts of Cold Outreach

Every prospect's inbox has trained them to skim past your message before they've read a word of it. Here's what actually gets one read.

The two seconds of silence

I was DJing a set last year and dropped a song completely out of genre, just to see what would happen. The floor went quiet for two seconds, then louder than before. Not better, just unexpected.

Open any inbox and you already know what's coming. “Thanks for connecting.” “Just following up.” Read a thousand times, those lines stop registering as words. They register as noise, and noise gets deleted without guilt.

Not better, just unexpected.

Try it: fix a message

Read time 11 sec

Hi Priya, I came across your profile and was really impressed by what you're building at Acme. We help companies like yours scale outbound with AI. Would you be open to a quick 15-minute call this week to explore synergies?

  • Generic opener
  • Pitch on message one
  • Ask for a call

Same prospect, same product. Only the shape of the message changed.

01Pattern disruption

Six ways to break the pattern

Tap a card. Each one works for the same reason: it doesn't fit the shape a prospect has learned to skim past.

Three things I learned the hard way
01

It's not a hack, it's physics

These aren't clever tricks. They interrupt a pattern the brain has learned to ignore. The moment something doesn't fit the shape a prospect skims past, their attention holds for half a second longer. That half second is the whole game.

This is how we run it at Myntmore.

Respectfully, Teejay

02By channel

Same principle, different channel

What works on LinkedIn reads as a pitch in email, and vice versa. Pick one.

Do

  • Warm up first, a like or comment before the connection request
  • Send blank connection requests, a note this early often reads as a pitch
  • Reference something real, a post, a role change, company news
  • Run it as a sequence over days, not one message and done

Don't

  • “I came across your profile and was impressed”
  • A pitch deck or calendar link on message one
  • The identical note to everyone on the list
03Cold email

Ten subject lines that get opened

Pulled from sequences that are running right now. Every one of them looks like a real email, not a broadcast.

  • Sales DeptQuick 15-min call this week?

All lowercase on purpose. It reads like something a person typed on their phone, not a campaign. Pick a line on the left to see it sit between the broadcasts.

04The unglamorous part

What is enrichment?

A raw list of names isn't enough to write the kind of message this guide describes. Enrichment adds real details to a lead, so a message can reference something specific instead of guessing.

Without it, personalisation is a merge field with a first name in it.

Tools worth knowing

  • Apollo.ioProspecting database with enrichment built in.
  • ClayWaterfall enrichment across many sources at once.
  • ClearbitCompany firmographics appended via API.
  • Hunter.ioFinds and verifies email addresses.
  • ZoomInfo / LushaLarger paid databases for teams at scale.
